Preventing scissor lift accidents

Louisiana workers who use scissor lifts may be unaware that they can be dangerous. In fact, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration investigated 10 deaths that were preventable and more than 20 preventable injuries that occurred over a one-year period. OSHA determined that the majorities of the injuries and fatalities were caused by lack of training.

There are four areas where safety training is needed. The first is fall protection. Employers should teach their employees to check to see if a guardrail system is in place on the scissor lift. Additionally, the employee should only stand on the platform and never stand on the guardrails. The work should be kept in easy reach so the employee does not have to reach over the guardrail, potentially falling. Stabilization is another major area. The scissor lift should be isolated from other machinery and should only be used when the weather conditions are appropriate.

Positioning is important to prevent potential accidents. Employees should be careful when the scissor lift is working around moving or fixed objects. If the scissor lift will be around an electrical source, the worker should be specifically trained to work in these positions. Employees and employers should prevent a potential collapse by following the load ratings and safety maintenance.

A workplace accident can prevent a person from being unable to earn an income during the recovery period. Most employees are eligible to receive workers' compensation benefits that can help ease the financial burden of an injury, and many obtain the assistance of an attorney when they are preparing and submitting the claim.
