Common ways workers are injured while on the job

Even though most workplaces are designed to be safe and healthy environments, accidents still happen. To help avoid injury, potential disability and other unwanted complications, residents of Louisiana may wish to consider these common causes of workplace injuries.

Slips, trips and collisions with other workers are often avoidable, but they are incredibly common. Workers should take precautions to avoid contributing mistakes, such as forgetting to mop up spills, failing to secure extension cords and opening doors too quickly.

While fatigue and stress are notably different, both problems can cause similar issues such as impaired judgment, anxiety and increased risk of heart attack and stroke. Keeping a good sleep schedule, spending quality time with friends and family and keeping outside distractions at home can be effective methods for avoiding stress and fatigue. It is important for individuals to find techniques that best work for them.

Workers who perform repetitive actions may be putting themselves at greater risk for carpal tunnel and other related maladies. Having good posture and taking breaks when necessary can help avoid these problems. Lifting objects that are too heavy and using an improper lifting technique are two other common ways individuals hurt themselves while working.

If a worker has been injured while on the job, he or she may be eligible for workers' compensation. The vast majority of employers are required by law to provide workers' compensation, and applying is generally simple. Recompense for damages can be provided in many ways depending on the injury, including funds for medical expenses, job re-training, and paid time off of work. If an individual would like assistance with filing a claim, certain legal representatives may have the knowledge needed to guide them through every step of the process.
