Accident takes the life of construction worker in Louisiana

Shortly after 4 p.m. on Dec. 16, a construction vehicle was involved in roadwork that was being performed by three workers on U.S. Highway 165 north of Columbia. The construction truck was equipped with a sizable arrow board and was in the outside lane facing north.

At that time, a 42-year-old Columbia woman was traveling in the same lane in a Cadillac ATS. She tried to move over to the inside lane but subsequently hit the back of the construction truck.

All three of the construction workers suffered injuries. One of the construction workers suffered serious harm and was airlifted to an Alexandria hospital. He succumbed to his injuries later at 9:10 p.m., according to Louisiana state troopers who were contacted by the hospital. He was 30 years old and from West Monroe. The other two workers suffered moderate injuries and were taken to a local hospital.

The crash is still under investigation, and a toxicology sample is undergoing analysis to determine if impairment was involved. The driver of the Cadillac was cited for careless operation of a vehicle. She was allegedly adjusting her radio, according to state police, before colliding into the truck. She was also treated for minor injuries.

In a case where a worker is injured or killed while on the job, the worker or their family could be entitled to compensation through the employer's workers' compensation carrier. Such benefits obtained by filing the claim may assist with income loss as a result of missed work, loss of future income if the deceased is the primary support for the family or medical expenses.
